rail
The UK’s rail network covers 33,700 km, and includes some 40,000 bridges and tunnels. The extent of works being carried out across the countries rail infrastructure is vast. Network Rail’s own figures quote that in 2006 alone, over £3 billion was spent on engineering projects across the network. Year on year, £800 million is being invested back in track and £390 million invested in bridges, viaducts, tunnels and embankments.
The drive to bring down journey times continues via the upgrading for track and the reducing of bottlenecks. The UK’s busiest line, the West Coast Mainline is seeing an £8 billion programme of investment that is already reductions journey times between London, Manchester and Glasgow.
Schofield Lothian has been involved in this project and many others in some form or other and we are proud of our relationship with Network Rail and the many key contractors that work to deliver an improved rail network for future generations.
Finally, the London 2012 Olympics is seeing an enormous programme of investment in rail infrastructure in preparation for the Games.
