Victoria Station Upgrade Project
12/06/08
The £509 million Victoria Station Upgrade Project is part of Transport for London's five-year, £10 billion investment programme designed to ease congestion and accommodate future growth. The project is due to commence at the start of 2009 and run through to 2014.
Victoria Underground station is used by over 75 million passengers each year and is at the heart of the capitals transport network. The work is designed to relieve the severe congestion at the station, particularly in the morning rush hour, where for short periods, it has been necessary to stop passengers entering the station to prevent platforms from becoming too overcrowded. A measure that has to be used several times every weekday for crowd control safety.
It is estimated that London’s growing population will result in 25% more passengers using the tube by 2016, equivalent to an average of 3.4m passengers every day
“The £509 million redevelopment of Victoria Station is a great example of the huge investment being made to improve the Tube and transport across the capital.” said former Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone when announcing the project.
"This expansion is essential to meet London's continued growth and development and to support the extra capacity on the Victoria line, due to be delivered by new trains and signalling system in 2013."
The project includes a number of elements:
The creation of new escalators, lifts, concourses, platforms and tunnels to provide access to platforms along with a new Northern subsurface ticket hall and an extension to the existing Southern subsurface ticket hall.
In addition there will be utility diversions and sewer strengthening works, infrastructure for the Cooling the Tube Programme and the potential modernisation and integration of other station areas.
The Schofield Lothian team will provide an initial Risk Management Audit and Review for the project from June 2008, several months before the formal issue of ITT to main Contractors.
